Description
This dataset includes respiration data for two invertebrate species, the sponge Chondrilla nucula and the gastropod Hexaplex trunculus, which were produced using an experimental set up with metabolic chambers. The parameters estimated for each specimen of each species were O2 consumption (mg/g/h) and wet weight (g). Specimens of both species were subjected to experimental conditions simulating different climate change scenarios. Using a common garden experiment, individuals from northern and southern populations were exposed to combined warming and acidification scenarios to assess their adaptive capacity.
Data Records
The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 16 records.
2 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.
Versions
The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Project Data
"MACCIMO aims to assess the effect of climate change on sessile marine invertebrates, the organisms mostly affected by environmental pressures due to their reduced motility. The proposed approach involves experimental exposure of the targeted organisms to combined temperature and low pH gradients, in order to simulate the synergistic impact of naturally occurring stressors. The overall objectives of the proposed research project are: (a) To implement an integrative approach for the estimation of climate change impact on different marine invertebrate taxa with partial or low motility. (b) To examine the different mechanisms – molecular and physiological– activated to cope with the imposed stress factors, as well as to investigate the alterations in structural morphology and associated microsymbiotic communities. (c) To study intra-species variation in response to thermal and oxidative challenges, in order to unravel the potential diversity of adaptations in geographically distinct populations."

| Design Description | The research tasks in the framework of MACCIMO are organized into 6 distinct work packages (WPs). WP1 oversees the scientific management and coordination of the project. WP2 manages the experimental setup and provides samples to WPs 3-6, each one assigned one analytical approach for the assessment of response of target organisms to experimental treatment. |
Sampling Methods
Individuals of both species were collected from two locations, one in the South Aegean (Crete) and one in the North Aegean (Chalkidiki), from a depth up to 5 m, by SCUBA or free diving. To ensure that sponge fragments belonged to different individuals, C. nucula patches with a distance of more than 5m between them were selected. Collected specimens were transported live to the experimental facilities, in individual aerated bags placed in cooler boxes.
| Study Extent | Samples for the laboratory experiments were collected by SCUBA or free diving from the North Aegean (Chalkidiki) and the South Aegean (Crete). |
