說明
This dataset comprises morphological data for two annelid species, the polychaete Glycera tridactyla Schmarda, 1861, and the sipunculan Phascolosoma (Phascolosoma) stephensoni (Stephen, 1942), obtained using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT). Several parameters related to the eversion mechanism of the pharynx in Polychaeta and the introvert in Sipuncula were estimated through two- and three-dimensional analyses of micro-CT datasets from specimens in different body configurations.

計畫資料
Traditionally, robots are machines controlled by a central unit to perform predefined tasks in structured environments. MAPWORMS challenges this view by developing robots inspired by simplified marine annelids that respond to environmental stimuli and adapt through shape-morphing. These robots are built using smart shape-memory hydrogels that react to factors such as chemicals, ions, light, and pH. By combining responsive and non-responsive materials, actuation units are designed to translate stiffness changes into shape transformations. This approach integrates biological inspiration, materials science, mathematical modeling, and robotics to create adaptive machines and functional actuators.

| 研究設計描述 | "MAPWORMS intends to: 1) study adaptation and plasticity of the body plan in Marine Annelida and shed light on the specialization process that allowed forms appeared early in the evolution of the Phylum to adapt to different environments; 2) develop a mathematical model of Annelida plasticity and adaptation to the environment through burrowing, protrusion of parts of their bodies, and morphological changes; 3) develop smart soft materials embodying responsivity, shape morphing and self-healing capabilities, and based on DNA components; 4) develop bio-inspired modular shape morphing robots across the scale. and provides samples to WPs 3-6, each one assigned one analytical approach for the assessment of response of target organisms to experimental treatment." |
取樣方法
Individuals of P. stephensoni were sampled on hard bottoms at Marina di Pulsano, while individuals of G. tridactyla were sampled on soft bottoms in the semi-enclosed Strea inlet, Porto Cesareo.
| 研究範圍 | Samples for micro-CT imaging were collected between the tide level and 0.5 m depth with hammer and chisel (P. stephensoni) or using a shovel and a sieve with 1 mm mesh (G. tridactyla). |
